We typically leave the news about TV show pickups and cancellations to our TV nerd cousins over at Warming Glow, but I just learned about CBS ordering a sitcom about two bros working for Groupon — to be played by McLovin’ from Superbad and some dude named Nicholas Braun — and I just can’t not post about it.
No, I am not kidding, CBS is actually doing a show about Groupon employees and the title is nothing short of absurdly mind-boggling: Friend Me. Do the network’s executives not know the difference between Groupon and Facebook? Or are they betting that their viewers don’t? It’s like CBS is wearing a sign that says “We’re old and we know it and we desperately want to appeal to young people.”
On the comedy side, the network that brought us Twitter-based $#*! My Dad Says and Twitter-based actor Ashton Kutcher is once again showing its affinity for new media. CBS has greenlit Friend Me. Here’s the (rather extensive) logline: “Twentysomething best friends, Evan and Rob, move from their hometown of Bloomington, Ind., to Los Angeles to begin their exciting new lives working at Groupon. Evan is having trouble breaking his old slothful habits and rather than go out after work to explore L.A. and meet new people, prefers to play online poker with his buddies back home. Rob has different plans and is determined to drag Evan, kicking and screaming, along with him.” Cast includes Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Nicholas Braun.
Maybe Groupon can scam people into paying to be extras on the Groupon TV show? That’d be pretty freaking meta, wouldn’t it?
